LUXURY DESIGN LAB DEVON RELEASES FINAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR ITS MUCH- ANTICIPATED TREAD 2, THE COMPANY’S SECOND LINE OF TIMEPIECES
During the past couple decades Southern California has become a hotbed of advanced design. The area is home to some of the world’s preeminent design schools and a countless group of companies have spent billions of dollars building advanced design studios here. Given such an environment, it’s really no wonder that design lab Devon Works places so much emphasis on innovation.
DEVON displayed their much-anticipated Tread 2 timepiece last year at the 2012 Baselworld International Watch and Jewelry Fair. The response was overwhelmingly positive and orders began to pour in. The company’s founder, Scott Devon, should have been a happy man, but he wasn’t. He lost sleep agonizing over whether the Tread 2 was really ready for prime time. And so last summer, at the risk of making some unpleasant waves with the company’s sizeable network of 100 retailers and countless customers around the world, he marched his design team back to the drawing board. “I felt the original Tread 2 design was in danger of being considered derivative of the Tread 1, sort of like when the successful rock band plays it safe with their second album,” said the hard-charging Devon from the company’s headquarters in Los Angeles. “I’m glad we took our time and revisited the design. To me, it now has the emotive power people have come to expect from us. With Tread 2 I think we again achieved our goal of making sure every product that comes out our door is something truly special and segment-defining.”
To that end, he and Ehren Bragg, the company’s Managing Director, gave the team a blank slate from which to start. “We told them everything was on the table except for the dimensions of the movement,” said Bragg. “Other than that, they could do whatever they wanted.”
What resulted can fairly be called a watch that stands up squarely next to the Tread 1 in the growing DEVON collection. Gone is the complex bracket system that had previously held the bezel onto the case and in its place the team placed a collection of eight fasteners that provide instant visual interest to the face of the watch. And while the Tread 2’s crown retains its innovative articulating arm, it now closely resembles the business end of a hunting knife. Even the master link system has been changed in order to provide a more integrated transition from case to strap.
The enhancements continue inside the case according to DEVON’s chief engineer, Jeff Stephenson, “We've incorporated various enhancements to the programming of the movement in order to make it more refined and user-friendly. DEVON Tread 1 owners will notice a more mature functionality that perfectly suits the flavor of the Tread 2.” In addition, Stephenson and his team have incorporated a chronograph feature, which is a treat to behold. Actuated by pushing down on the crown, the chronograph ticks off seconds on the minutes belt and minutes on the hours belt and can be reset at the touch of a cleverly designed button situated in the middle of the crown.
The Tread 2’s debut collection will again be displayed at this year’s Basel fair in April and consist of four different versions – one that is exposed 316L stainless steel, one that is coated with true-black Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC), another with red and black finishes and a fourth that is white. Production will begin this June with deliveries commencing in early July. “After seeing the finished product,” says company designer Marko Petrovic, “people will agree that it was well worth the wait. I know I can’t wait to wear mine.”

American timepiece manufacturer DEVON has earned a reputation for turning out dazzling designs that challenge industry conventions and create buzz all around the world. Their debut watch, the Tread 1 recently made its way to the finals of the highly respected GRAND PRIX D'HORLOGERIE DE GENEVE in the category of Best Design and Concept Watch - a feat never before achieved by an American watch brand. Since then people the world over have been wondering what might be coming next from this independent and bold newcomer, and now their wait is over. Today at the Baselworld Exposition, the world's largest watch show, DEVON has unveiled its follow-up timepiece, the Tread 2.
"Our products are designed, developed, engineered and manufactured in Southern California with American aerospace engineers and suppliers who are not constrained by tradition or status-quo but are accustomed to pushing the boundaries of what's been done before," said Scott Devon, the company's founder.
Tread 2 continues to use of the Tread 1's patented movement technology employing an innovative system of fiberglass-reinforced nylon Time Belts. The belts are only 2/1000th's of an inch thick and are a technology appropriated directly out of the cockpits of airliners like the Boeing 747 where they indicated vital measurements such as air speed and fluid levels. the belts are mounted on a central chassis and driven by two extremely compact microstep motors. These motors and all other watch functions are controlled by a microcontroller, essentially an extremely compact computer inside the heart of the watch. Loaded with DEVON's proprietary software, this computer manages all of the timepiece's functions and ensure precision time-keeping, the preliminary testing of which indicates an unusually accurate tolerance of only one half-second per day.
Led by founder Scott Devon and headquartered in Los Angeles, California, Devon Works, LLC is a design lab dedicated to creating innovative luxury products that exemplify the American spirit. Devon Works began with the design of the exclusive Devon GTX supercar and continued with the revolutionary Tread 1 timepiece.
