Meccaniche Veloci and Brembo team up to create the World’s 1st and only Carbon-Ceramic watch
For many years now the Formula 1 industry has championed the use of
carbon fiber as a superior material for creating a competitive edge.
With the current buzz surrounding the Moto GP and the Ducati carbon-framed Desmosedici GP9,
it seems only timely that two other Italian companies should unveil the
world's first carbon fiber encased wristwatch, the Quattro Valvole CCM.
Italian watchmaker Meccaniche Veloci and Brembo, supplier of high
performance brake discs, have banded together to create the unique
timepiece. Building on the already established Quattro Valvore series of
watches, the two companies reportedly spent four years researching and
developing the watch. The watch is made from carbon ceramic – which is
the material Brembo uses to manufacture its high-tech brakes – using the
same process as competition specific pistons. Made up of short carbon
fibers, phenolic resin and silicon, the end result is 30% lighter than
cast iron. Due to the structure of the material, only a limited number
can be produced in a month, with each Brembo disc yielding just seven
pieces.
The Quattro Valvole series of watches takes its name from the four
valves that Ferrari used in its 1984 model 308 GTS and lovers of racing
will not be disappointed with the aesthetics on display here. Featured
are four separate faces, each with independent Swiss mechanical
movements
In 2009, Meccaniche Veloci found their answer in the advanced carbon ceramic technology pioneered by Brembo, a world leader in the production of racing braking systems. In partnership with Brembo, Meccaniche Veloci introduced the Quattro Valvole CCM, which is now the flagship model in the Quattro Valvole collection.
This revolutionary watch is fabricated out of the same high performance carbon ceramic material
Brembo uses to manufacture its high-tech competition brakes. Due to the
structure of this carbon fiber, phenolic resin and silicon material,
only a limited number of these exotic watches can be produced each
month. Each Brembo brake disc provides the case for just seven hand fabricated watches.
Aluminum, titanium, stainless steel, Carbonfiber...it was only a matter of time before somebody made a watch out of carbon ceramic. Meccaniche Veloci commissioned Brembo, the most recognized name in braking technology to produce a special edition Quattro Valvole Carbon Ceramico (CCM), that could just be the ultimate racing watch. The carbon-ceramic watch case is made by Brembo using the same process as it uses for producing its carbon ceramic racing brake discs. Short fibers of carbon are combined with high-strength ceramics and formed using high-pressure water jets. The result is incredibly strong yet lightweight construction that is also highly resistant to corrosion or deformation.
