Every single U-Boat timepiece is
individually handcrafted in Italy by master craftsmen, dedicated to the
highest level of precision engineering and finishing, where care and
attention to detail span the entire process, from the very first
prototype to the final assembly of the watch.
THE HISTORY
Lucca, 1942.
Ilvo
Fontana, crafter of precision engineering instruments, received a
prestigious commission from the Italian Navy: to design and build a new
type of watch for their pilots. This challenge meant satisfying the high
quality standards of the Navy and respecting very precise technical
specifications, but above all guaranteeing maximum visibility and
reliability in any light or weather condition. However, circumstance at
that time did not allow the project to materialize. In 2000 Italo
Fontana, Ilvo’s grandson, discovered these precious designs, which were
to become his source of inspiration for the creation of the first U-Boat
watch and his new dimension in time. U-Boat watches are characterized
by their strong identity, large size, perfect legibility in all light
and weather conditions, along with their bold and distinctive design:
the left crown protected by a specially designed safety cover.
Every individual U-Boat watch is handcrafted in Italy and each tiny detail is overseen by Italo Fontana.
SPECIFICATIONS:
MOVEMENT : Arola-Alfred Rochat & Fils Automatic
Rattrapante Chronograph derived from the Valjoux with a 30 mm diameter, 8.10 mm thickness, 25 rubies, the stem positioned at 9 o’clock. Soigné finishing, 4-position adjusted, 28.800 alternations
per hour. Power reserve 40-44 hours.
FUNCTIONS: hours, minutes, small seconds at 3 o’clock, seconds
chronograph, central rattrapante coaxial, minute chronograph at 6 o’clock, hour chronograph at 12 o’clock. Date at 9 o’clock.
CASE: AISI 316 plus stainless steel. 51mm diameter. 59.60 mm diameter including external crown-clutter. The bezel and the back of the case are locked together by external
tubing and a customized key that ensures absolute water-proofing.
Thickness: 19.60 mm.
Weight: 200 g approx.
CRYSTAL: sapphire glass on the face and at the back of the timepiece,
both thick and flat with a double compression gasket fitted.
WATER RESISTANCE: 50 m, 5 ATM.
DIAL: dial with increased strength, hour and minute indexes treated
with superluminova.
STRAP: in rubber with alligator inset, dark brown and steel
tongue buckle, hand made and hand finished. Width 23/20 mm,
hypoallergenic and colour retain treatment, fasten to the case
with steel screws.
